Or cry out to you, \u2018Violence!\u2019 but you do not save?\u201d<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Hab%201.5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Habakkuk 1:5<\/a>, \u201cLook at the nations and watch\u2014and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.\u201d<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Hab%201.12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Habakkuk 1:12<\/a>, \u201cAre you not from everlasting, O\u00a0Lord\u00a0my God, my Holy One? We shall not die\u201d (ESV).<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Hab%202.2%E2%80%934\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Habakkuk 2:2\u20134<\/a>, \u201cThen the\u00a0Lord\u00a0answered me and said: \u2018Write the vision And make it plain on tablets, That he may run who reads it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time; But at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it; Because it will surely come, It will not tarry. Behold the proud, His soul is not upright in him; But the just shall live by his faith\u2019\u201d (NKJV).<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Hab%202.20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Habakkuk 2:20<\/a>, \u201cThe\u00a0Lord\u00a0is in his holy temple; let all the earth be silent before him.\u201d<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Hab%203.2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Habakkuk 3:2<\/a>, \u201cLord, I have heard of your fame; I stand in awe of your deeds,\u00a0Lord. Repeat them in our day, in our time make them known; in wrath remember mercy.\u201d<br><br><a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Hab%203.19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Habakkuk 3:19<\/a>, \u201cThe Sovereign\u00a0Lord\u00a0is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights.\u201d<br><br><strong>Brief Summary:\u00a0<\/strong>The Book of Habakkuk begins with Habakkuk crying out to God for an answer to why God\u2019s chosen people are allowed to suffer in their captivity (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Hab%201.1%E2%80%934\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Habakkuk 1:1\u20134<\/a>). The Lord gives His answer to Habakkuk, essentially stating, \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t believe it if I told you\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Hab%201.5%E2%80%9311\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Habakkuk 1:5\u201311<\/a>). Habakkuk then follows up by saying, \u201cOK, you are God, but, still, tell me more about why this is happening\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Hab%201.17%E2%80%942.1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Habakkuk 1:17\u20142:1<\/a>). God then answers him again and gives him more information, then tells the earth to be silent before Him (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Hab%202.2%E2%80%9320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Habakkuk 2:2\u201320<\/a>). Then Habakkuk writes a prayer expressing his strong faith in God even through these trials (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Hab%203.1%E2%80%9319\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Habakkuk 3:1\u201319<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Foreshadowings\"><\/span>Foreshadowings<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The apostle Paul quotes\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Hab%202.4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Habakkuk 2:4<\/a>\u00a0on two occasions (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Rom%201.17\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Romans 1:17<\/a>;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Gal%203.11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Galatians 3:11<\/a>) to reiterate the doctrine of justification by faith. The faith that is the gift of God and available through Christ is at once a faith that saves (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Eph%202.8%E2%80%939\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ephesians 2:8\u20139<\/a>) and a faith that sustains throughout life. We attain eternal life by faith, and we live the Christian life by the same faith. In contrast to the \u201cproud,\u201d whose soul is not right within him (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/nasb95\/Hab%202.4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Habakkuk 2:4, NASB<\/a>) and whose desires are not upright (NIV), is the one made righteous by faith in Christ. That person\u2019s sin was exchanged for Christ\u2019s perfection (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/2%20Cor%205.21\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2 Corinthians 5:21<\/a>). Now his soul\u00a0<em>is<\/em>\u00a0right within him, and his desires\u00a0<em>are<\/em>\u00a0upright, as Christ has enabled him to live by faith. The redeemed person is not proud but is humble (see\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Matt%205.5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Matthew 5:5<\/a>). He follows the Lord Jesus, who is \u201cgentle and humble in heart\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Matt%2011.29\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Matthew 11:29<\/a>).<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Practical_Application\"><\/span>Practical Application<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The application to the reader of Habakkuk is that it is permissible to question what God is doing, although with respect and reverence. Sometimes it is not evident to us what is going on, especially if we are thrown into suffering for a time or if it seems our enemies are prospering while we are just barely getting by. The Book of Habakkuk affirms that God is sovereign and omnipotent, and He has all things under control. We just need to be still and know He is at work. He is who He says He is and does keep His promises. He will punish the wicked. Even when we cannot see evidence of His dominion, God is still on the throne of the universe. We need to stay focused on this: \u201cThe Sovereign\u00a0Lord\u00a0is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to tread on the heights\u201d (<a href=\"https:\/\/biblia.com\/bible\/esv\/Hab%203.19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Habakkuk 3:19<\/a>). To \u201ctread on the heights\u201d is a picture of our ability, in the power of God, to rise above the troubles and hindrances of this world and experience victory over our enemies.
